The UFC continues their international expansion with UFC 110. This card which takes place in Sydney, Australia is pretty stacked. No title fights but lots of intriguing match ups. I am going to make this short and sweet since the wife is waiting for me to finish so we can continue to try and understand the final season of Lost. (Seriously, what is the deal with the new Others?) Be sure to listen to MMA Gospel tomorrow night where I will share my picks live on the air.
Here they are, The Fight Pastor’s picks for UFC 110! I am sure to do better than I did for UFC 109.
James Te Huna vs Igor Pokrajac
In the fight that no one will see or care about, the Australian native James Te Huna faces Igor Pokrajac. Te Huna is on the card solely to pander to the crowd. He is facing a tough fighter in Pokrajac whose last fight in the UFC was a decision loss to Vladimir Matyushenko. I am not really familiar with either of these fighters so I am going out on a limb and picking the home town favorite. Te Huna will win by 3 round decision.
CB Dollaway vs Goran Relijic
A submission guy, Goran Relijic, versus a wrestler, CB Dollaway. Relijic is a tough fight for Dollaway. CB has tons of potential but tends to struggle in the octagon. My heart says CB pulls this out by decision but my brain says Relijic submits him in the 2nd round. After a tv interview and 2 newspaper interviews in the past two days, I am too weary to listen to my brain. Don’t let me down CB! Dollaway by decision.
Chris Lytle vs Brian Foster
This is going to be a grueling war. Both guys fight hard. Brian Foster booted Brock Larson from the UFC in his last fight and Chris Lytle has his share of quality wins (and defeats). This fight is going to be fun to watch. If it ends early it will be due to a Lytle TKO. But, I don’t see this ending early. Chris Lytle will pull off a 3 round split decision.
Stephan Bonner vs Krzysztof Soszynski
Bonner and Soszynski is going to be a war! This is a potential fight of the night bout. Both guys are fighting to stay relevant in the UFC. A loss for either probably doesn’t mean their exit but it gets them a lot closer to the door. Both guys are pretty well rounded with their share of victories (and defeats) in a variety of ways. Bonner tends to struggle against stronger guys (see Mark Coleman) and Krzysztof struggles against quality strikers (see Brandon Vera). This would appear to favor Bonner. I like Krzysztof more but I am going with Stephan Bonner by decision.
Elvis Sinosic vs Chris Haseman
Seriously, Dana? Who really wants to see this fight? This seems like a better option for a local casino fight than a UFC event. Elvis Sinosic greatest claim to fame is that he has padded the win/ loss record of many UFC fighters. Chris Haseman is simply fighting because he is from Australia. So here we have the ultimate pandering to the crowd. Two less than stellar Australian fighters going at it. Sinosic will pull off a 2nd round TKO forcing us to see him fight again when the UFC goes back to Australia.
Mirko Cro Cop vs Ben Rothwell
This fight is going to surprise some people because the average fan will expect Mirko Cro Cop to go out and blast Ben Rothwell. But Rothwell is a quality fighter with a much more well-rounded style than Cro Cop. If Cro Cop doesn’t take him out within the first round, Rothwell will take him to the ground and use his size to control him. This is going to be a disappointing fight for many as Rothwell takes Cro Cop down and lays on him for 3 rounds ultimately pulling off a decision.
Keith Jardine vs Ryan Bader
Two guys I have met multiple times and really like. Jardine is the veteran who has been in some wars and Bader is the up and coming light heavyweight with loads of potential. This one is pretty simple. If Jardine is able to use his awkward striking and is able to stay on his feet he will pull off the decision. On the other hand, if Bader is able to use his wrestling and get The Dean of Mean to the ground he will get the win. I can see either possibility actually happening. It will boil down to who can handle the long travel better. Though this is a huge step up in competition for him, I am going with the wrestler. Bader by decision.
Joe Stevenson vs George Sotiropolous
I have a prediction. This fight is going to the ground. Two quality grapplers going at it. Sotiropolous will be a huge home town favorite. He is, by far, the most talented Australian on the card. He is facing a major step up in competition against Joe Daddy. If this was fought in the US I would go with Joe Stevenson but the energy from the crowd, along with the difficult travel for Stevenson will be enough for Sotiropolous to pull off the minor upset. Sotiropolous by decision.
Wanderlei Silva vs Michael Bisbing
Michael Bisbing is the most over rated fighter in the UFC. The Axe Murderer will knock him out in the 2nd round.
Minotauro Noqueira vs Cain Velasquez
The main event features the past, Nogueira, versus the future, Velasquez. It also pits a wrestler against a submission fighter so this fight is going to the ground. I think Nogueira’s experience will be enough for him to pull out this victory. It will end up being the second lackluster main event fight in a row for the UFC. Nogueria will destroy the Velasquez mystique with a 2nd round submission victory. Nogueria will then get TKOed by Brock Lesnar in July.
There you have it. The Fight Pastor’s fearless predictions for UFC 110. As always, let me know what you think. Am I a prophet or should I be stoned?
