I hate to admit, but I never saw an episode of The Ultimate Fighter season 10 because it is not shown in Mexico, and even if it was shown, I didn’t have a TV. I had never heard of Demico Rogers or Justin Wren before this week. When I heard they would be on the radio, I sat in my car in the parking lot of my job listening, after all I was going to meet them later in the day, and wanted to have something to say to them other than awkward questions like “have you ever punched someone really hard?” It was a great interview; it was evident that these guys have spent a lot of time being interviewed. I squealed with delight and almost wet my self when Demico said he wanted to thank Fight Pastor.
Around 11, when I had worked up a disgusting sweat by such grueling tasks as vacuuming, and washing mirrors, Justin and Demico came in for a Fight Pastor photo shoot. I got several pictures with both fighters, all of us wearing the Fight Pastor shirts, afterwards we were all talking, and it got out that I have fought. Justin immediately invited me to train with them later on in the afternoon. I was as giddy as a Girl Scout selling cookies outside a Weight Watchers convention.
We got to their gym and started warming up, Now Demico is fighting this Saturday so he was doing more of am intense warm up, because he didn’t want to risk hurting himself. At no time was I even remotely worried about me hurting him, if anything he could have hurt himself in the process of hurting me, but me hurting him…….
Ryan, a long time friend of Demico was also training with us, he and I worked on punches for a while and then Justin came over and he helped us with some take downs using the fence. We took a break and Demico asked if there was anything specific we wanted to work on, he then turned his head, looked right at me and said “Like cardio?” Everyone laughed and I was completely embarrassed, but once I had stopped weeping in the locker room I was ready to go. Justin then did MMA rounds with us, to help him train for his fight in March. It has been a very long time since I have grappled anyone close to my size; I was able to squirm out of a few submissions, only to be trapped in another.
It wasn’t just Justin mounting me and then turning my face into a puddle of goo, but he was very helpful and would stop to give me pointers and advice. Demico was also very helpful by coaching and yelling in what to look for and how to get better position. I did one round with Demico, I’m pretty sure I tapped, but he had me in a head crank and my memory is a little blurry. Justin had some amazing rolls, and reversals. Every time I thought I had a good position, he would spin out and trap me somewhere else. My favorite submission of the evening was when I rolled to my stomach because I thought he was growing tired of punching me in the face so I wanted to give him something else to punch and he took my back, wrapped my arm around my neck choked me with it, and punched me in the face, repeatedly until I tapped.
We finished the workout and posed for a picture, Demico and I were wearing the exact same shirt, he had only a little bit of sweat on his, while mine was wet enough to drink from.
I was very impressed with both Justin and Demico; they are some of the nicest and most helpful people you could ever meet. They took time out of their training regiment, to help me improve; it just shows the great character of these guys. Watch Demico fight on Saturday February 13 at Rumble on the Ridge at the Snoqualmie Casino.
